In the early 90's my wife bought my eldest daughter a cheap rod and reel from the tackle shop in our local village. My daughter, otherwise scorned as clearly a newbie by the boys round Stonegate pond in East Sussex promptly pulled a large Bream, the biggest any of the said boys had seen out of said pond at her first attempt. Four children meant four of everything and I was to pick up the bill. That week a liquidation auction for a tackle shop in Hastings was announced in the small print of the local press. My wife obtained the auction catalogue. The details were Greek to me and we turned to an accomplished angler for advice. Off my wife went to Hastings, I did not join her, it would have meant a day off. The advice was Abu Garcia are best. What to pay? I said if it is described as being in good condition just put your hand up till you own it.
The scene that was described had the room packed with gruff anglers looking askance at a petite woman dressed for the occasion, that is to say tailored and tasteful. As my wife set about overfilling her boots, about ten reels and rods and quite a lot else besides, several of them started to discretely ask her for advice, along the lines of what do you make of this pointing to some catalogue description and one or two grudgingly offered their congratulations as she won yet another bidding set to.
