About this design
Chuck Yeager ... one of the most famous test pilots of all time. Yeager has accomplished much throughout his life including combat missions in WW2, being shot down, evading enemy capture and then re-entering service to claim 13 kills of his own, 5 of which were all in one day!
After the war, he went on to become a flight instructor in the Air Force and a test pilot. In 1947 he was chosen to test the Bell X-1 (or XS-1) rocket plane in an attempt to "break the sound barrier", to achieve supersonic speeds which had never been done before.
Many people were skeptical, thinking that the aircraft would "break up" as it approached the sound barrier. But The USAF, Bell & Yeager proved them wrong on 14th October 1947 during XS-1 flight number 50. The X-1 recorded supersonic flight, at Mach 1.06 (361 m/s, 1,299 km/h, 807.2 mph) and had broken the sound barrier for the very first time.
