This famous painting, Owned by the Uffizi Gallery, was painted for Lorenzo di Pierfrancesco de' Medici's Villa di Castello around 1482. It is also said that the painting is a celebration of the love of de' Medicis mistress Simonetta Cattaneo Vespucci. I went to Florence years ago but I did not have chance to see it . My schedule was tight and there were so many people lined up outside of museum.... now I regret that I did not make big effort to go there. This painting is recreated in 1988 film "The adventure of Baron Munchausen" with Uma Thurman.
To the layman, I suppose the most famous Botticelli would be 'The Birth of Venus ' (personally I can't help thinking of Monty Python . Not to lower the tone, of course). This particuar design depicts the arrival of Spring. The story (although historically unclear), is that such pagan depictions were later a source of spiritual conflict that would result in a 'Bonfire of the Vanities '. Other stories tell of his simply abandoning such paintings, having (according to Vasari ) fallen under the influence of a Dominican Friar by the name of Savonarola . Whatever happened, Obscurity, following his death in 1510, would be Botticelli's lot until the 19th century.
