About this design
The Centaurus was the final development of Bristol Engine Company’s series of sleeve valve radial aircraft
engines, an 18 cylinder two row design that eventually delivered over 3,000 hp (2.2 MW). The RR Merlin in the Spitfire deliverd about half this power. The Centaurus powered many aircraft most notably the Hawker Sea Fury and Hawker Tempest , Short Solent, Bristol Brabazon and the Blackburn Beverley. The engineering that has gone into the Centaurus is remarkable. I can watch the motion of the crank journals but can I really understand it? Like Ricky Jay dealing cards you know something is going on but you can't be sure what it is. The engine is fabulous to look at and glorious to hear. I heard it for the first time at the Farnborough Air Show powering a Hawker Sea Fury, a real pleasure. Celebrate engineering that is elegant and effective in every way, wear our Bristol Centaurus t shirt.
