About this design
Although the pivoting arm semaphore was patented in the early 1840's by Joseph James Stevens, it's roots go back to the semaphores invented by Charles Pasley (1780-1861), a Scot from Dumfriesshire.
Although still in place today, their use is restricted to secondary routes and even they are fast being replaced.
One cannot get too sentimental about such things, as time, tide and of course progress waits for no man, but i'm sure their iconic status will be with us for years to come.
