About this design
Forbidden and incomprehensible knowledge, leading to madness, was the stock in trade for Lovecraft. Cosmicism, the literary philosophy developed by Lovecraft, refers to the idea that Humanity are an insignificant race, floating on a rock through space. Around them and at great distances, great intergalactic beings, with motives far beyond human morality continue as if we are little more than insects, who, like other races, will come and go. As you can see he was a cheery sort.
At the time he enjoyed little literary success, but went on to become one of the most influential horror writers of the 20th century. He also created an entire Mythos - The Cthulhu Mythos. This was constructed with much that was borrowed from other writers and at the centre of which, is the being Cthulhu itself. This giant creature is imprisoned (and had been for millenia), in a sunken city called R'lyeh beneath the Pacific. From here, it would exert its cosmic influence on mankind, leading to eventual madness.
Not the greatest writer, Lovecraft did have a vision, albeit in response to his dislike of organised religion and whilst it's sometimes difficult to get through, his stories are enduring and enthralling. Much like the mind of the Great Ones themselves.
