About this design
This t-shirt design admires one of the most gifted and respected mathematicians of classical Greece.
Born approx. 287 BC in Sicily (which was then under Greek control in "greater Greece"), Archimedes wasn't just a mathematician, but also a physicist, engineer, astronomer & inventor.
He is famous for many things such as the Archimedes Principle, Archimedes Water Pump (Screw-pump), Hydrostatics, Levers & Infiniesimals.
This design admires the moment Archimedes ran down the street naked whilst screaming "Eureka!", which happened after he worked out a way to test the density of an irregular object.
As the story goes, a new crown in the shape of a wreath had been made for King Hiero II. Archimedes was asked to determine whether it was of solid gold, or whether other materials had been added by a dishonest goldsmith. Archimedes obviously had to solve the problem without damaging the crown.
He decided that a body immersed in a fluid experiences a buoyant force equal to the weight of the fluid it displaces. Using this principle, he compared the density of the golden crown to that of solid gold by balancing the crown on a scale with a gold reference sample, then immersing the apparatus in water. If the crown was less dense than gold, it would displace more water due to its larger volume, and thus experience a greater buoyant force than the reference sample.
