About this design
Marie Curie - Polish born Physicist and Chemist and unprecedented achiever of two Nobel prizes in both disciplines, mother to a Nobel Laureate and the first woman to be be bestowed a Professorship at the University of Paris.
Marie Curie coined the term "radioactivity" during her work on isotopes of certain elements that were observed to decay with time, during which she discovered two new elements naming them Radium & Polonium. In a further multidisciplinary career she directed the first works into Oncology founding an institution in Warsaw in 1925 to be run by her Physician sister to this end.
Even in death she continued to pioneer and to be decorated, with her and her Nobel co-laureate and husband Pierre's remains being exhumed in 1995 from their place of burial in Sceaux to be re-interred at the Paris Pantheon, becoming the first woman to be so honoured.
Most fascinating and with the passage of time and with greater knowledge based on her precedents, is that her very daily activity is testament to her studies into the nature of radioactivity. Her papers from the 1890s (and even her cookbook) are considered too dangerous to handle. They are kept in lead-lined boxes and anyone wishing to consult them must wear protective clothing.
