Ronnie Barker aka Gerald Wiley t shirt
Never-mind comic, an outstanding and under recognised actor first and foremost, but also a uniquely talented wordsmith, Ronnie Barker was and remains difficult to describe and to surpass.
In a time when recognition for ones endeavours within entertainment, or in fact any field, surmised within the pavement puddle of provocateurs notoriously known nowadays as ‘celebrity’, it is easy to let fade the idea of an entertainer so massive in talent, stature and popularity, who would seek the humility of not one but many alter egos.
When submitting his written contributions to the BBC, including for his own sketch show, in order that they be accepted only on merit, Barker assumed various pseudonyms sometimes even rejecting his own submissions.
Despite being responsible for some of the greatest British sit-com character incarnations as Norman Stanley Fletcher in Porridge and Arkwright in Open all Hours , and enjoying a 16 year run on British Television as 50% of the “Ronnies” remarkably Barker chose to retire from the business they call show.
His famous sign off from the ‘news’ section of the Two Ronnies deftly hinted at this reluctance to genuinely come to the fore, bidding a farewell from ‘him’, in reference to the actor who even at that moment dwelt in the character he was portraying, leaving his own persona perhaps private, but undoubtedly free.
